What exactly is a SuperTruck? And is that even a word? Technically, no. While SuperTruck has not yet made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary, it has been in use for some time now, specifically when the U.S. Department of Energy launched the SuperTruck initiative in 2009. Since then, the SuperTruck initiative has gone through several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2014\/03\/f8\/deer12_koeberlein.pdf\">iterations and updates<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">                         <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of the SuperTruck initiative was to demonstrate a 50% improvement in overall freight efficiency, as expressed through a ton-mile per-gallon metric. For a heavy Class 8 tractor-trailer, this would represent a significant gain over technologies in place prior to the initiative. Yet, as a perfect example of what industry and government can do when they work together, the industry team participants have successfully met or exceeded the goals outlined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider this: If all Class 8 trucks operating in the U.S.\nwould adopt SuperTruck technologies, we would lower oil usage by an estimated\n300 million barrels annually. This would also save trucking companies an\nestimated $20,000 per year on average. So, what are companies waiting for? It\nis important to remember that much of this is still in development. Let\u2019s learn\nmore about what they are working on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The SuperTruck\nDevelops<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DOE most recently completed a SuperTruck progress report\nin 2016. The teams involved in this report included Cummins\/Peterbilt, Daimler,\nVolvo, and Navistar. Together, they have completed approximately 32 different\ntechnologies outlined in the initiative. Many of the innovations the team\ncompleted relate to aerodynamic and engine\/drivetrain integrations. Considering\nthe promising returns seen when these technologies were implemented, customers\nquickly became interested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, in the near horizon, another 15 technologies look to be\nready for market reach by 2020. Between 2021 and 2026, customers may see\nanother 13 technologies come to market. Innovations are centered around\naerodynamic packages and engine thermal efficiency improvements. Yet, not all\nthe technological solutions being worked on focus on those two factors. Partner\ncompanies are also developing individually-marketed design efficiencies that\nwill work across a broad suite of technological solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With relatively easy integration and a demonstrated quick\nreturn on investment, fleets have already begun incorporating SuperTruck\ntechnologies into fleet operations. Awareness around fleet efficiency and\nclimate change has also influenced those who are early adopters. One example of\nthis is Hendrickson\u2019s 6&#215;2 axle configuration and lightweight brake and\nsuspension components. These are SuperTruck technologies that have been quickly\npicked up by fleets across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dead tag axles and liftable forward tandem axles have been\ntested in the marketplace for many years and are now showing real potential.\nThe new Freightliner Cascadia, which has demonstrated impressive new efficiency\nnumbers, is one such example of an OEM adopting a SuperTruck technology and\nthen demonstrating real gain in its use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are all the areas in which SuperTruck technologies have\nbecome commercialized and are seeing widespread adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Engine and\nDriveline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The big rig engine has come a long way over the years. The\nefficiency numbers we see today represent a huge improvement over engines\nmanufactured just 10 or 20 years ago. Still, <a href=\"https:\/\/quicktransportsolutions.com\/blog\/how-to-decide-which-engine-to-pair-with-your-big-rig-transmission\/\">the\ndiesel engine<\/a> has been a constantly-evolving machine. Since it was first\ndeveloped in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century, it has undergone countless revisions\nand updates to suit the needs of industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that diesel engines have the highest thermal\nefficiency of most standard internal and external motors (when excluding\nelectric motors)? Yet, because of efforts like those made in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arb.ca.gov\/msprog\/onrdiesel\/onrdiesel.htm\">state of California<\/a>,\nthe trucking engine has evolved even more. Now, SuperTruck technologies have\nhelped evolve the engine in a way never thought possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Current SuperTruck Engine Tech:<ul><li>Downspeeding<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Intelligent torque management<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Integrated engine\/transmission controls<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Friction loss reduction using lubricants,\nmaterials and coatings<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Parasitic loss reduction using engine\naccessories<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Improved internal combustion<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Improved aftertreatment<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Improved air handling<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Synthetic engine lubricants<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the engine is not the only place where SuperTruck tech\nhas changed the name of the game. The driveline has also seen widespread\nchange. Weight reduction has been one area where change has come quickly. From <a href=\"https:\/\/quicktransportsolutions.com\/blog\/taking-a-closer-look-at-transmissions-of-big-rig-trucks\/\">automated\nmanual transmissions<\/a> to predictive shifting, let\u2019s take a closer look at\nsome of the driveline technologies changed by the SuperTruck program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Current SuperTruck Driveline Tech:<ul><li>Automated manual transmissions (AMTs)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Predictive transmission shifting<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Optimized transmission gear ratios for downspeed\nengines<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Optimized transmission\/engine integration<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>6&#215;2 axles<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Neutral shifting on downgrades<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Reduced parasitic loss using lubricants and\nbetter transmission design<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Improved driveline lubricants for reduced\nfriction<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">                         <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Aerodynamics, Weight, and Energy Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main thrusts of the SuperTruck program surrounded\naerodynamic enhancements. We have come a long way from the days of a\ndiesel-belching cab pulling a single boxy trailer. Today, there are almost too\nmany aerodynamic enhancements to count, with many states making some of them\nmandatory additions. Even the federal government has weighed in on the issue of\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ops.fhwa.dot.gov\/freight\/sw\/aerodevice23cfr65816.htm\">aerodynamic\ndevice compliance<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Current SuperTruck Aerodynamic Tech:<ul><li>Tractor aerodynamics, including better bumper\ndesigns, roof fairings, chassis fairings, tractor\/trailer gap fairings<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Trailer aerodynamics, including side skirts,\nboat tails, gap fairings, vortex eliminators<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the fun doesn\u2019t stop there. Weight reduction and energy\nmanagement have been huge targets. As novel new composites hit the market,\ntrucking companies test them, determine their efficacy, then move forward with\nutilizing them in the manufacturing process. Energy management has been\nspearheaded using technologies, better wheel and tire design, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Current SuperTruck Weight Reduction and Energy\nManagement Tech:<ul><li>Aluminum fifth wheels<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Aluminum tractor and trailer wheels<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Aluminum driveshafts<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Lightweight brakes<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Fabricated seer axles with integrated disc brake\nknuckles<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Single wide-base tires for both tractor and\ntrailer tandems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Reduced rolling resistance tire compounds and\ndesigns<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Predictive GPS cruise control<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Eco-driving feedback systems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>LED lighting systems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Overnight idling reduction systems using\nauxiliary power units (APUs)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eye on Mid- and\nLong-Term Adoption<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With so many current technologies in place, the future of\nSuperTruck tech looks very bright indeed. This can be seen with the launch of\nSuperTruck II. SueprTruck II has set the energy-saving bar higher than ever. It\naims to ensure research, design, development, and demonstration of advanced\nClass 8 fuel economy technologies continues unabated. Their goal? A whopping\n100% improvement in fuel efficiency! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cutting-edge technology concepts required to meet this\ngoal are currently undergoing testing and development and, as with any brave\nnew concept or launch, there have been some obstacles and roadblocks, whether\nit be in technology readiness, cost reduction, or regulatory compliance. While\nthese obstacles are standing in the way of commercial viability, progress is\nmade almost daily on addressing the concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, that should not stop the big dreamers. The SuperTruck\ntechnologies available today are quickly morphing into the SuperTruck\ntechnologies of tomorrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Future SuperTruck Engine Tech:<ul><li>High-pressure fuel injection systems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Improved piston bowl designs<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Turbocharger and EGR enhancements<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Electrified auxiliary systems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Waste heat recovery<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Advanced engine controls<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Engine structural materials for higher peak\ncylinder pressures<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Future SuperTruck Driveline Tech: <ul><li>Dual clutch AMTs<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Gear coatings and lubricants for reduced\nfriction<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Electrified auxiliaries<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Hybridization<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond what is going on under the hood, currently available\nintegrated air suspension systems can be further adapted to optimize weight\nreduction. These systems will also enable suspension lowering technologies and\nother integration opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aerodynamic and tire rolling resistance technologies and\nsolutions will also continuously evolve. By properly maintaining controlled\ntire pressure even more than it is today, and depending on the environmental\nconditions, we will see these factors have an outsized impact on fuel\nefficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Future SuperTruck Aerodynamic and Energy\nManagement Tech:<ul><li>Active aerodynamics, such as grill shutters<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Cab and hood redesign<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tractor and trailer underbody aerodynamics<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Further tractor\/trailer gap reduction<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Cameras to replace mirrors<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Articulation gap reduction design<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Lightweight suspension, driveline, and frame\nrails using advanced composites<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Automatic tire inflation systems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Novel low rolling-resistance tire compounds<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Battery-based idle management systems<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Cab thermal management<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Advanced predictive engine accessory and\ndriveline controls<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Wind\/weather-based cruise control<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Solar energy harvesting<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Promise of\nTomorrow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovations proceeds unabated, which is something that holds true for SuperTruck technology. The technologies gained through this successful program have increased overall efficiency and reliability, without a huge increase in cost to trucking companies. With the new challenge looking to gain even greater efficiencies, expect to see SuperTruck tech evolve at a breakneck pace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">                      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the OEM teams proving up to the challenge, not only to\nachieve the goals outlined, but to bring the products to market, the promise of\nfreight efficiency of tomorrow has become the new target\nfor today. If you think today\u2019s truck technologies are special, just wait\nanother few years.
