From GPS coordinates to fuel and even truck driver behavior, telematics provides the big picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">                                                                                    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are truck drivers braking, suddenly swerving, or getting\ninvolved in too many accidents? Smart fleets use technology to isolate the data\nthey need to prevent such events from happening. Still, it is important to\nremember that telematics don\u2019t tell the full story regarding what happens on\nthe road and in the cab. Sometimes you need more than just a telematics device.\nThis is where integrated video systems come in. Even better, these systems can\nconnect and talk to telematics systems. When you put vehicle data and\ntelematics together, you are getting the <em>real <\/em>big picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that 90% of motor-vehicle collisions are caused\nby human error? That\u2019s right. Whether it be the truck driver or someone else on\nthe road, it is usually an individual behind a wheel that is the primary cause\nfor a road incident. Video helps you answer crucial questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How can video telematics help you understand the\nroot causes of collisions and other road accidents and incidents? <\/li><li>How can video-based data help you identify and\nreward good truck driving behaviors?<\/li><li>How can you predict which truck drivers are more\nlikely to be involved in a collision using telematics data?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Put It All Together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many different scenarios where a fleet manager can\nget critical insight to an event. Yet, there is a bit of forensics involved. It\nis easy to look at raw data and make an assumption without knowing what\nhappened in a real-world scenario. Let\u2019s take a look at how this can be applied\nwith a hypothetical scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider the following hard braking scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A brake test is conducted in the morning as part\nof typical vehicle maintenance and testing. It registers as a severe event, but\nvideo shows that it\u2019s just a good safety check, not risky driving.<\/li><li>A commercial vehicle makes frequent stops.\nAlthough stopping a little abruptly could cause vehicle wear and tear, video reveals\nthat this is part of the job and not considered risky driving.<\/li><li>A truck driver reacts abruptly to avoid a\ncollision after maintaining only a one-second following distance\u2014a common\nbehavior that in this case was captured on video. Because this is not enough\ntime to see a problem and smoothly respond to it, this is considered a risky\ndriving event.<\/li><li>A truck driver demonstrates good defensive\ndriving by skillfully avoiding a collision when a car suddenly cuts in front of\nhis truck. Although the telematics data indicates that this is a risky event,\nvideo proved it was, in fact, an example of good driving.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the four hard-braking events shown here, only one was\nrisky. Which one was it? Traditional telematics suggests that all four were\nrisky. But by capturing data that provides real-time context, video telematics\nreveals that, in fact, only \u201cC\u201d was risky. This is where a combined approach\nshines a spotlight on blind spots in your strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional telematics often doesn\u2019t tell the complete story. Video can provide critical contextual insights to help you understand what really happened. Video can adequately reveal the root cause of almost any collision. And furthermore, video enables fleet managers to identify and analyze patterns of risky driving behaviors, and to help coach drivers to change these behaviors before they lead to collisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">                                                                                    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to traditional vehicle telematics, video telematics\ntechnology provides a high level of data and insights that give organizations a\nmore complete picture of what is occurring in their fleets\u2014including how safely\ntheir drivers are operating on the road. There simply is not a substitute for\nactually seeing what happened, as opposed to hearing about it or reading about\nit in the data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an event occurs, telematics data tells us when and\nwhere the event happened. It can also offer a forward-facing external view as\nto what happened on the road. An internal camera event recorder also shows what\nthe truck driver was doing at the time of the incident. There are many ways\nmotor carriers combine the technologies to provide a comprehensive event\nwindow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Data Reveals Behavior<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers have reviewed videos generated by hard-braking\nand cornering maneuvers to identify the root-cause behaviors of the maneuvers. They\nhave also identified significant behavior differences and calculated collision\nprobabilities to correlate behaviors that show a higher likelihood of future\ncollisions. The data is quite interesting and points to even greater need for\nvideo and telematics solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the data and risky behaviors that video\nreveals can help you quickly identify the truck drivers who are most likely to\nbe in a collision, so you can focus on helping them improve their skills and\navoid a collision altogether. This is where coaching comes in, which we will\nget into a little bit later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question now is, what will the data reveal? If you were\nto compile your telematics data to look at braking events, you might find the\nfollowing factors involved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cell Phone<\/li><li>Late Response<\/li><li>Following Too Closely<\/li><li>Truck Driver Unbelted<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cornering events could include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Truck Driver Unbelted<\/li><li>Cell Phone<\/li><li>Failed To Stop<\/li><li>Incomplete Stop<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Video telematics helps pinpoint risky driving. But that\u2019s\nonly part of the story. It also highlights and documents good driving, like\nhard braking or other defensive maneuvers to avoid a pedestrian. Most truck drivers\nunderstand (and appreciate) that video telematics doesn\u2019t just record mistakes,\nbut can help them become better drivers, exonerate them from false claims, and\neven save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With video telematics, your company can also recognize and\nreward&nbsp; truck drivers who demonstrate a\ntrack record of safe driving. A little recognition goes a long way toward\nboosting employee morale and productivity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a culture of safety where drivers are passionate\nabout safety and compete with each other for the safest driving performance\nevery month. This is the ideal scenario for any trucking company, whether large\nor small. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Collision Avoidance is Key<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near-collision events involve driving behaviors that are\ncorrelated with those near misses. When researchers analyzed a sampling of\nnear-collision events of clients across all industries, they found that 18% of\nthe events were correlated with drivers\u2019 failure to keep an out, and 11% were\ncorrelated with insufficient following distance. Combined with cell phone use,\nthese three behaviors are correlated with nearly 40% of the near collisions\nstudied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry analysis also showed that truck drivers with a\nnear-collision event are nearly six times more likely to be involved in a\ncollision within six months than a driver without a near-collision event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top behaviors related to near-collision events include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Failing to keep an out<\/li><li>Following distance<\/li><li>Cell phone usage<\/li><li>Late response<\/li><li>Intersection awareness<\/li><li>Mirror use<\/li><li>Smoking<\/li><li>Food &amp; Drink<\/li><li>Red light<\/li><li>Failed to stop<\/li><li>Posted speed violation<\/li><li>Other distraction<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prevent these problems, you need to rely on effective coaching. Many professional drivers are sports fans. They know the value of good coaching and how critical video is in the coaching process.
