Overview
The Conservation Lands Maintenance Worker will play a vital role in preserving and maintaining the integrity of local parks and recreation areas, with a primary focus on the conservation of trails and natural landscapes.
This position involves performing routine and deferred maintenance tasks, including trail clearing, vegetation management, erosion control, and ensuring the safety and accessibility of recreational spaces.
You will be responsible for maintaining both developed and natural park areas, ensuring that trails and surrounding conservation lands remain in excellent condition for public use.
A strong commitment to environmental stewardship, attention to detail, and experience in park maintenance are essential to succeed in this position.

Essential Functions
Conservation Lands
+ Maintain recreational infrastructure using both machinery and hand tools, including trail layout, construction and repair, and fence/sign installation and repair.
+ Implement habitat restoration, including greenhouse maintenance, native seed and plant material collections, out planting and seeding, and maintaining existing restoration sites through weeding and watering.
+ Perform weed mitigation tasks, including hand-pulling, mechanical removal, mowing, chipping, herbicide application and insect releases.
+ Plant trees and various other forest and vegetation management, including forest thinning, formative pruning, watering, and removal or burning of slash.
+ Assist in simple construction projects, including painting, minor repair of park fixtures, and basic maintenance of irrigation systems.
+ Track work and inventory resources through tabular and digital data collection, including using field tablets and GPS units.
+ Perform routine maintenance and maintain inventories of materials, equipment, and vehicles.
+ Operate mowers, ATV's, UTV’s, brush chippers, utility trucks, small dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, mini-excavators, and skid-steers.
+ Provide support with snow and ice removal using various tools and equipment.
+ Pick-up garbage, including shop and storage areas.
+ Perform other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
All positions:
+ Knowledge of and ability to promote safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA/MUTCD and ANSI standards and guidelines related to park maintenance and construction.
+ Skill in following oral and written instructions while working independently with minimum supervision.
+ Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
+ Ability to operate vehicles, small power equipment, hand tools, and light to heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner.
+ Ability to identify and implement risk management techniques to reduce exposure to injury, damage, and liability.
+ Ability to read, comprehend and write incident reports and other operation reports and documentation.
+ Ability to learn and follow City and departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
Conservation Lands:
+ Knowledge of and the ability to learn safe herbicide application practices and procedures.
+ Knowledge of general maintenance procedures for conservation and open space lands and facilities.
+ Knowledge of habitat restoration and/or trail construction projects.
+ Skill in utilizing various digital equipment, including tablets and GPS units, with the ability to learn job specific applications and equipment.
+ Ability to learn to identify native and invasive plants and animals for western Montana and the greater Northern Rockies region.
Working Conditions:
+ Position requires the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.

+ Duties are frequently performed under conditions where inclement weather, noise, heat, dampness or cold are unavoidable.
+ Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions, occupational hazards, biohazards, blood borne pathogens, sharps, herbicides, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Qualifications and Additional Application Materials
All positions:
+ Any combination of training and experience equivalent to one (1) year of maintenance, light equipment experience, or another relevant field appropriate for the specific position.
+ Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
+ May be required to obtain a Montana commercial driver’s license
(CDL) within 60 days of hire.
