Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of, but not limited to, a variety of bulldozers, scrapers, graders, and 2-yard loaders.
Work will involve daily light maintenance as well as scheduled servicing of assigned equipment in addition to manual labor duties (picking up blowing litter, building and maintaining fences, stacking waste tires, etc.) Operation of the assigned equipment is normally a predominate task in the work performed.
Assignments are usually received in the form of specific orders to complete assigned work.
Operator may be called upon to provide supervision over one or more maintenance and/or Department of Correction workers.
Work is reviewed both in progress and upon completion for execution of the job, care of equipment and safety of operation.
Essential job functions Disposes of refuse with the use of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, scrapers, graders, loaders, and other similar equipment.
Cleans, performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment.
Makes necessary work orders and reports.
Secures tools, supplies, machinery and equipment for job assignments.
Washes and cleans equipment as needed.
May perform semi-skilled labor in connection with fence maintenance and construction, controlling and picking up blowing litter, recycling projects, etc.
May assist in survey work, welding and other construction trade functions.
May assist in water sampling and methane gas monitoring.
Performs related work as required or assigned.
Required contacts: Ability to effectively communicate with employees in order to receive work orders or instructions for any project.
Knowledge, skills and abilities: Ability to read, interpret and understand local, state and federal regulations related to disposal.
Knowledge of the processes used in the collection and disposal of waste materials.
Ability to follow instructions and manuals for equipment repair and maintenance. Skill in the use of various equipment and machinery such as hand and electrical power tools and heavy equipment utilized in disposal activities such as compactors, lifts, claws and hydraulic systems as well as simple shovels, brooms and rakes.
Ability to read operator's manuals and work orders.
Education, experience and certification required High school diploma or equivalent plus one to three years of equipment operation required.
Must have a valid driver?s license with an acceptable driving record.
Must be able to obtain a Class ?B? CDL with tanker and hazardous materials endorsements within 90 days of hire. Physical/mental requirements Must lift, walk and carry over 50 pounds on a regular basis.
Light to moderate lifting on a more frequent basis. Must be able to climb onto, into and under equipment.
Must be able to perform strenuous tasks for prolonged periods in adverse weather conditions.
Must be able to stoop, kneel, crawl and bend over to lift and perform job functions.
Must have vision and eye-hand coordination to operate safely and proficiently; hearing to observe engine sounds.
Must be able to work effectively with a crew; follow oral and written instructions, sometimes in a lead capacity; and provide quality customer service.
Must be available to work Saturdays on a rotating schedule.
May have to work unusual shifts of long duration.
Environmental conditions and safety concerns Some physical inconvenience or discomfort routinely present in the work situation.
About 90-100% of the time the incumbent is outdoors.
Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperatures while operating equipment or completing projects.
Possible hazards encou tered include, but are not limited to, potentially hazardous fumes and odors, glass and sharp objects, diseases, hepatitis, mechanical and chemical hazards.
May be required to serve on City?s Contingency Response Force.
