:
Job assignments are usually for the summer or for short periods during breaks from an accredited college or university.
Learn and perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution of electrical service for the City of Grand Island.
: Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Follow instructions to accomplish tasks assigned by supervisor.
Perform routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery and tools; ensure that service vehicles are equipped to respond to emergency situations.
Assist tree crew; with identifying obstructed lines; work with crew chief in removing limbs and trees accordingly; chip wood from limbs and trees; grind stumps as necessary
Assist with cleaning vehicles, equipment and City facilities associated with electric lines work.
Operate and use a wide variety of equipment including various hydraulic, hand and power tools, various trucks, wire pulling equipment, chippers and voltage meters.
Meet required schedules while producing quality work.
Receive close supervision on all aspects of assignments and hands-on teaching from assigned supervisor.
Take the initiative to learn standard practices and techniques.
Recognize discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
Be proficient in all equipment, machinery, and/or software required to accomplish assigned tasks.
Perform related duties as assigned.
: Knowledge of:
Safe work practices
May require the use of a variety of office equipment including computer and telephone.
Names, uses and locations of materials and line equipment stored on maintenance vehicles.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
May require the use of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools, depending upon job assignment.

Ability to:
Be attentive to detail.
Learn techniques and procedures used in working on de-energized and energized primary, secondary and services.
Learn pole climbing techniques using line worker climbers and belt.
Learn names, uses and locations of materials and line equipment stored on line and bucket trucks.
Learn meter installation techniques used in primary and secondary rated metering.
Learn to identify voltage level and types of power lines.
Lift and/or move heavy weights.
Perform work during adverse weather conditions.
Perform work from ladders, at varying heights above ground level and in confined spaces.
Drive and operate all vehicles and equipment assigned.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Use higher level technical skills obtained during secondary educational courses.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

No prior work experience required.
Training:
Applicant must currently be enrolled at an accredited university or college, majoring in field of the internship, with a plan of working in that field as a career.
License or Certificate:
Employee must possess a valid drivers license and maintain insurability as determined by the Citys insurance carrier, CDL preferre .

Hours will vary
Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.
- 4:00 p.m.
Must be able to workevenings, weekends and holidays depending on departments needs.
The duration of the position is May through August.
Salary:
Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table.
Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
