West Whiteland Township is currently seeking qualified candidates for the 1 full-time position of Skilled Worker within the Public Works Department.
The Department Operations:
The Public Works Department is composed of 16 full-time employees who are responsible for the Township's infrastructure, including 71 miles of roads and storm sewers, maintenance of 12 parks and the Township Building, the sanitary sewer system with five pump stations and over 100 miles of sanitary lines, as well as fleet maintenance.
The Position:
The Public Works Skilled Worker is responsible for the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and for performing manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the Public Works Department.
Work will include park, road, and sewer maintenance.
The Skilled Worker will perform a variety of duties, such as:
- Operating Township-owned vehicles, such as pick-up trucks, backhoe, dump trucks, salt spreaders, snowplows, etc.
- Operating and maintaining power tools and equipment, such as mowers, chain saws, air compressor, etc.
- Inspection and repair of equipment as required by department procedures.
- Repairing Township roads, curbs, and sidewalks.
- Landscaping and tree trimming.
- Cleaning and maintenance of Township facilities and parks, as well as cleaning up litter and emptying trash cans.
- Maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers and making repairs and/or conducting routine maintenance procedures.
- Sweeping and clean-up of debris and materials from the roads.
- Snow and ice removal, including manual shoveling of snow.
- Perform heavy manual labor, including lifting heavy objects and working in all type of weather conditions.
- Ensuring that all safety procedures and practices are adhered to, including wearing safety equipment.
The ideal candidate:
- will have basic knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a municipal Public Works Department along with prior construction, maintenance and/or trade experience.
- must have a valid Pennsylvania State commercial driver's license (CDL A is preferred).
- must have knowledge and the ability to operate Township-owned vehicles and equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoe, snowplows, salt spreaders, power tools, chain saws, air compressor, etc.
- must have the ability to communicate, understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- must be able to work in a variety of conditions including storm events, late hour emergencies and snow/ice removal which may require extended work hours.
- must maintain a good working relationship with co-workers and the general public.
- must be available for some evenings, weekends, and holidays for emergency callouts and routine maintenance;
- must be knowledgeable in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks;
- experience in electrical, HVAC, plumbing, sanitary sewer maintenance is preferred; and
- DEP wastewater systems certification is a plus.
