Diesel Fuel Calculator: Estimate Trip Fuel, DEF, and Cost Per Mile

Diesel Fuel Calculator: Trip Fuel Cost for Trucks (2026)

How does a diesel fuel calculator work? It divides your trip distance by your fuel economy to get gallons, then multiplies by the diesel price – at $6.285 a gallon, a 1,000-mile run at 7 MPG costs about $898.

Diesel has moved fast this month, and a rough guess at trip fuel cost gets expensive when the pump price climbs 31.8 cents in a single week. This free calculator turns your distance, fuel economy, and diesel price into a fuel bill, a DEF bill, and a cost per mile you can actually quote from.

Key Takeaways

  • Diesel averaged $6.285 per gallon the week of September 14, 2026, up 31.8 cents in one week and up 19.6% since August 10, according to the EIA weekly retail diesel table.
  • California diesel hit $8.039 while the Gulf Coast sat at $6.027. At 7 MPG, that $2.01 gap is about $287 more per 1,000 miles (EIA).
  • At 7 MPG and $6.285, fuel alone runs about $0.90 per mile, against a 2025 fuel average of $0.48 per mile in the ATRI operational cost report.
  • DEF adds 2-3% of diesel volume at $3-$5 per gallon, about $14 per 1,000 miles in our worked example (OTR Solutions).
  • The standard fuel surcharge formula gives roughly $0.78 to $0.84 per loaded mile at today’s price, which is past the top row of at least one popular 2026 chart (O Trucking).
  • Argonne puts idling for a big truck at about 1 gallon per hour, or roughly $6.29 an hour at current prices (Argonne National Laboratory).

How do you use this diesel fuel calculator?

Enter your trip distance, your truck’s fuel economy, and the diesel price you expect to pay. Pick the units you think in, because the calculator converts miles, kilometers, MPG, km/L, L/100 km, gallons, and liters behind the scenes. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

Default is the EIA national average for the week of September 14, 2026.

Covers detours, yard moves, and reroutes. Try 3 to 5.

Multiplies the per-trip cost for a weekly or monthly total.

Cost per mile is based on the distance you entered, before the extra allowance, so it lines up with the miles you get paid for. The estimate covers fuel and DEF only. Tolls, scales, parking, and reefer or APU fuel go on top. If you do not know your MPG, work it out from your last fill-up with our miles per gallon calculator.

How does a diesel fuel calculator work?

The math is short. A diesel fuel calculator converts everything to one set of units, works out how many gallons the trip burns, and prices them. Here are the four formulas this page uses.

Fuel (gallons) = distance (miles) / fuel economy (MPG)
Diesel cost = fuel (gallons) x diesel price ($ per gallon)
DEF cost = fuel (gallons) x DEF share (%) x DEF price ($ per gallon)
Cost per mile = (diesel cost + DEF cost) / miles

The unit conversions are fixed numbers. One gallon is 3.785 liters and one mile is 1.609 kilometers, so 7 MPG equals 2.98 km/L and 33.6 L/100 km. Mixing units is fine, which helps when a fuel receipt in liters lands next to a dispatch sheet in miles.

A worked example makes it concrete. Take a 1,000-mile run at 7 MPG with a 5% detour allowance, EIA’s $6.285 national price, and DEF at 2.5% of diesel volume and $4.00 a gallon.

Worked example: one 1,000-mile trip at 7 MPG
Step Calculation Result
Distance with 5% allowance 1,000 mi x 1.05 1,050 miles
Fuel needed 1,050 mi / 7 MPG 150.0 gallons
Diesel cost 150 gal x $6.285 $942.75
DEF needed 150 gal x 2.5% 3.75 gallons
DEF cost 3.75 gal x $4.00 $15.00
Total fuel-related cost $942.75 + $15.00 $957.75
Cost per mile (entered distance) $957.75 / 1,000 mi $0.958

Inputs: EIA national diesel average for September 14, 2026; DEF share and price from OTR Solutions ranges; 5% allowance is our planning assumption.

What is diesel costing right now?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration put the national on-highway diesel average at $6.285 per gallon for the week of September 14, 2026. IndexBox’s read of the same release shows a one-week jump of 31.8 cents and a year-over-year increase of $2.55. That is the highest reading in the six-week EIA table, and the climb has not been gentle.

U.S. diesel price by week and what it does to a 1,000-mile trip at 7 MPG
Week of U.S. average ($/gal) Fuel for 1,000 miles at 7 MPG
Aug 10 $5.257 $751.00
Aug 17 $5.454 $779.14
Aug 24 $5.652 $807.43
Aug 31 $5.599 $799.86

From August 10 to September 14 the national average rose 19.6%. On a 1,000-mile trip at 7 MPG, that is about $147 more in fuel for the same load on the same road. If you priced a lane in early August and never revisited it, you are probably eating that difference.

How much does fuel cost per mile for a truck?

The FleetOwner write-up of ATRI’s 2026 cost analysis puts the industry-average cost to run a truck in 2025 at $2.336 per mile, a record and 3.4% above the year before, per ATRI’s own release. Fuel made up about $0.48 of that. Costs outside fuel rose 4.2% to $1.854 per mile.

ATRI’s report said, “Average on-highway diesel prices in 2025 enjoyed their most stable year since the pandemic.” That stability is over. At 7 MPG and $6.285, fuel alone costs about $0.90 per mile, roughly $0.42 more than ATRI’s 2025 fuel average. Over 100,000 miles that gap is about $41,600 per truck, and that is a rough comparison because fleets do not all run 7 MPG.

Fuel cost per mile by fuel economy and diesel price
Fuel economy At $5.257 (Aug 10) At $6.285 (Sept 14) At $8.039 (California)
5 MPG $1.051 $1.257 $1.608
6 MPG $0.876 $1.048 $1.340
7 MPG $0.751 $0.898 $1.148
8 MPG $0.657 $0.786 $1.005
9 MPG $0.584 $0.698 $0.893

Prices from the EIA weekly diesel table. Cost per mile = price / MPG.

Look at the 6 MPG and 7 MPG rows at $6.285. The gap is about $0.15 per mile, or roughly $14,960 over 100,000 miles. One extra MPG is real money, which is why tire pressure, speed, and idle time deserve the attention they get. Our guide to the cost-per-mile method shows where fuel fits in the rest of the ledger, and drivers paid by the mile can compare pay against fuel with the truck driver salary calculator.

What should you add to a diesel fuel calculator estimate besides fuel?

DEF cost

Diesel exhaust fluid is a mix of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water that SCR-equipped engines from 2010 on use to cut NOx. OTR Solutions says consumption typically runs 2-3% of diesel volume and puts pump prices at $3-$5 per gallon. At 6 MPG and 100,000 miles a year, that works out to 333-500 gallons of DEF and $1,000-$2,500 per truck.

In our worked example DEF added $15.00 to a $942.75 diesel bill, about 1.6%. It is small, but it is not optional. The same source says a truck that runs dry on DEF drops into limp mode at around 5 mph, and many will not restart. Tick the DEF box in the calculator and it takes care of the math.

A detour buffer

Route numbers from a map are the best case. Detours, yard movement, traffic reroutes, and a missed exit all burn fuel that never shows up in the dispatch mileage. We suggest starting with 3 to 5% extra distance, then tightening it once your ELD or fuel receipts show how far your real trips drift from the plan.

Fuel tax and IFTA

Pump prices already include tax, but the paperwork behind it matters. The federal diesel excise tax is 24.4 cents per gallon, and IFTA-licensed carriers file one quarterly return through their base jurisdiction that reconciles fuel tax by where they drove and where they bought fuel, according to Compliance Navigation Specialists. Keep every receipt and log miles by state. Our primers on IFTA, BOC-3, and heavy fuel tax filings and tax savings for owner-operators cover the rest.

How do fuel surcharges compare with what you pay at the pump?

A fuel surcharge is the broker or shipper’s way of sharing diesel price swings. O Trucking’s 2026 guide states the formula as (current DOE diesel price minus a base price) divided by an assumed MPG, paid on loaded miles only. Its worked example is ($4.00 – $1.25) / 6 = $0.458 per mile, and its rule of thumb is that every $0.30 move in diesel changes the surcharge by about $0.05 per mile at 6 MPG.

Now plug in today’s price. The parameters matter a lot, and the same guide flags that a higher base price or a higher assumed MPG is how some brokers shrink the payment.

Fuel surcharge at $6.285 diesel under three common parameter sets
Base price Assumed MPG Surcharge per loaded mile On a 500-mile load
$1.20 6.5 MPG $0.782 $391
$1.25 6.0 MPG $0.839 $420
$1.50 7.0 MPG $0.684 $342

Formula and parameter ranges from O Trucking (updated September 7, 2026). Results at $6.285 are our arithmetic.

The published chart in that guide stops at “$5.00+” for $0.68 per mile, so a straight chart lookup at $6.285 undersells the formula by a wide margin. Ask for the formula, base price, and assumed MPG in writing on the rate confirmation. Remember too that surcharges cover loaded miles, while you also burn fuel deadheading to the pickup.

What does idling cost, and how can you cut trip fuel costs?

Argonne National Laboratory says long-haul trucks typically idle 6 hours a day, or 1,830 hours a year, though real habits range from a couple of nights a week to almost never shutting off. Its idling handout gives a rough figure of about 1 gallon per hour for a big truck. That handout is undated and appears to date to around 2010, so treat the number as a ballpark. At $6.285, one idling hour is about $6.29, and 1,830 hours would be roughly $11,500 a year.

Idling is only one lever. Tire pressure, speed, and route discipline all move MPG, and each MPG is worth about $0.15 a mile at today’s price. How was this article researched?

Methodology. Diesel prices come from the EIA weekly retail on-highway table released September 15, 2026, which we read on September 19, 2026. We used six weekly national readings (August 10 through September 14) and eleven regional and state readings for the week of September 14. Year-over-year and week-over-week changes come from IndexBox’s summary of the same release. Cost benchmarks come from ATRI’s July 2026 report and the FleetOwner coverage of it. DEF, fuel surcharge, fuel tax, and idling figures link to the sources named in the text.

Every trip cost, per-mile figure, and surcharge result in this article is arithmetic we ran using the same formulas as the calculator, and each is labeled as ours. We did not use forum anecdotes or unsourced statistics. Where a source was undated or imprecise, such as the Argonne idling figure, we say so.

Frequently asked questions about diesel fuel calculators

How accurate is a diesel fuel calculator for real trips?

It gives you a solid planning estimate, not a forecast. Real fuel burn moves with load weight, terrain, weather, speed, idle time, and stop frequency. That is plenty for quoting, budgeting, and dispatch prep, but when your ELD or fuel card data disagrees with the calculator, trust the data and update your inputs.

Can I use kilometers, liters, and L/100 km?

Yes. Enter distance in miles or kilometers, fuel economy in MPG, km/L, or L/100 km, and price per gallon or per liter. The calculator converts everything to gallons and miles internally, so the math stays consistent and the results show both unit systems.

Why include extra distance or DEF cost?

Extra distance covers the detours, yard moves, and reroutes that never appear in the dispatch mileage. DEF is a real operating expense on any SCR-equipped truck, at roughly 2-3% of diesel volume. Including both gives you a more honest trip cost than diesel alone.

What MPG should I use for a loaded semi?

Use your own trailing average from fuel receipts or ELD data, ideally over the last 60 to 90 days. If you have nothing yet, O Trucking reports that brokers commonly assume 6.0 to 6.5 MPG in fuel surcharge formulas, which is a reasonable conservative start. The calculator default of 7 MPG is a placeholder, not a benchmark.

Where do I find the current diesel price?

The EIA publishes a weekly retail on-highway diesel table with national and regional averages. The latest release covers September 14, 2026 and was published September 15. For the price you actually pay, your fuel card app or receipt is the better number.

How much does DEF add to trip cost?

Typical DEF use is 2-3% of diesel volume at $3-$5 per gallon, per OTR Solutions. In our worked example, DEF added $15.00 to a $942.75 diesel bill, about 1.6% on top of fuel.

Is diesel fuel tax deductible, and what is IFTA?

Fuel is a normal operating expense for most carriers and many owner-operators deduct it, but the rules depend on your business structure, so confirm with a tax professional. IFTA is the agreement that lets carriers file one quarterly fuel tax return through their base jurisdiction. Our guide to tax savings for owner-operators is a good next read.

Does this calculator include fuel surcharge revenue?

No. It estimates what a trip costs you, not what a broker pays you. Use the fuel surcharge formula and the parameter table above to check whether the surcharge on your rate confirmation covers the diesel you burn.
